Say hello to our new Intern.

We have a new intern to introduce today — Samuel (Sam) who has recently joined us here at Metis!

Here’s his quick-fire get-to-know-you:

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I’m an incoming penultimate student studying Civil Engineering at Imperial College London.

Having lived all over the globe, I was fortunate to spend a good portion of my life in the small city of Swansea, in South Wales. There’s no doubt that living in the heart of London is a huge contrast, but I don’t think I could go back!

When I’m lucky enough to have free time away from Uni, I try and play football for the college and relax.

Why internship at Metis?

I first came across Metis when I met Simon and Will at a careers fair run by the University last year, and they most certainly sold their company to me! Being half way in my degree, it really has made me think about what I want to go into once I graduate, so to get this opportunity with Metis, not only do I hope to be able to do something useful, but equally to get more of an insight into Flood Risk and whether it’s an area I want to pursue in the future.

And also with global warming becoming an ever increasing threat, and more flooding as a result of this, companies such as Metis are an essential part in protecting the communities we live in, and this will only become more important in the next decade to come.

What are you hoping to learn during your stay at Metis?

It would be great to be able to build on all the stuff that I’ve learnt during the past two years at Imperial, and to be able to apply that to real projects, and help change the lives of real people in the city of London beyond. I hope that I’ll get exposure to how we can identify and mitigate flood risks, and to be able to work on as many projects and with as many different people as I can in four weeks!

How do you imagine your future after your internship?

Well, first I must complete two more years in university. In between then I hope to get some more experience (maybe even here – who knows!) before deciding exactly what direction I’ll take. I’m certain it will be in Civil Engineering; but whether it’s consulting or contracting – I have no idea yet.
