Social value projects at Metis: Helping Bankside Open Spaces Trust get funding

At Metis, engaging in social value projects is very important to us. From offering free educational workshops to local schools and universities to assisting organisations in securing funding for their sustainability projects, we give back to the local community in any way we can.

Who is Bankside Open Spaces Trust?

Bankside Open Spaces Trust is a volunteer-run charity based in Red Cross Garden that is on a mission to protect, preserve, and enhance the green areas in its locality, including 19 much-loved parks, gardens, and other amenities.

Established in 2000, Bankside Open Spaces Trust have undertaken countless environmental and sustainability initiatives over the past 20 years to maintain and improve green spaces. They manage gardening groups, conduct educational workshops, and so much more.

How the Metis team got involved

Bankside Open Spaces Trust had some urban greening projects they wanted to execute along the Southwark old victorian railway. But they needed government funding to make it happen and asked Metis for help.

We decided to offer our flood risk management services pro bono to help Bankside create a comprehensive bidding proposal by gathering the technical information they needed to support their proposed design.

Our environmental engineers researched their design’s flood risk and draining aspects and used hydraulic modelling and appraisal techniques to facilitate better decision-making based on sound evidence.

Become a volunteer: Bankside Open Spaces Trust welcomes volunteers who would like to take part in their gardening and maintenance projects in the local area.

Team-building projects: You can organise a company gardening day with the charity to give back as a business and promote sustainability practices.

Get qualified: Bankside runs a horticultural training and qualification scheme for people who are currently unemployed and want to explore their Green Thumb talents.

Join the team: If you’d like to become a permanent member of the Bankside team, you can apply to join them in managing volunteering initiatives, running community events, and more.

Kids workshops: Bankside also offers workshops and classes for children with after-school and holiday programs at their Waterloo centre.

The Green Hub: You can also join the network for residents living in Southwark and Peckham called The Green Hub, where gardeners run workshops and training.
