“After having a phone interview with one of the directors, I was confident I wanted to complete my degree apprenticeship with Metis. ”
As a child, I always had an interest in things related to construction such as toys like Lego, games like Minecraft and construction vehicles. This developed into an appreciation for architecture and construction, which in turn led me to pursue an engineering career.
I came across Metis while searching for apprenticeships online. I had a look into the company’s history and once I saw its rapid growth, I applied. After having a phone interview with one of our directors, I was confident I wanted to complete my degree apprenticeship with Metis.
I am a degree apprentice, so I have worked within multiple teams in Metis. That’s included jobs such as creating online web maps, acting as a surveyor in road condition surveys, developing an automated planning app approval tool, and drawing core sample locations in CAD. My position as an apprentice gives me great flexibility to work on a variety of projects, which enhances my knowledge of engineering while I continue studying at university once a week.
I love the atmosphere at Metis. I’ve had experience working in multiple teams and seen the different ways in which they operate. Every team I’ve worked with has amazed me with their dedication, and the attention they give to their work and to each other. It ensures that we all deliver projects of excellent quality, and we all have fun whilst doing so. I am relatively fresh in the world of engineering, but right now I can’t imagine myself working for any other company besides Metis.
Carrying out surveys in Haringey and Tower Hamlets was incredibly rewarding. It allowed me to better understand road defects and how to evaluate the condition of a road. I also familiarised myself with the layout of two of the major London Boroughs. It was hard work covering the distance, but I had a lot of fun being out and about!
I aim to finish my degree and become a chartered engineer. Being the first apprentice to join the company, I also hope to potentially oversee the development of other apprentices at Metis.
My hobbies include working out at the gym, practising martial arts, gaming, and painting models.
If you want to pursue a career in engineering, taking the degree apprentice route is a wonderful option. It has the benefits of a full-time job, sponsored education, and five years of experience alongside a degree. I believe it’s the best route forward if you want to become an engineer.
