Asking Metis newbies about their experience here so far

At Metis, we’ve been steadily growing our civil and environmental engineering team since our establishment over a decade ago.

And we’re showing no signs of slowing down yet, as we have welcomed many new team members over the past few months!

Coming towards the end of the year, we thought that now would be the perfect time to ask our newbies how they’re getting on here at Metis, what they’ve liked about working here so far, and what they’ve learned.

What do you like about working at Metis?

Since my first day here at Metis, I have been welcomed very kindly. There is always a friendly environment where the work culture is both fun and stimulating.

My expectations of the company have been exceeded, and it’s a workplace where I would like to develop my skills and knowledge as an engineer.

What have you learned over the past few months?

I have learned to develop software skills, including AutoCAD, QGIS, and Excel. From the training exercises to using these applications in real-life projects, I’m now more aware of how we work here at Metis.

I’ve also learned that everyone in the company works to high standards, and there is always help. I can’t wait to keep expanding my knowledge!

What do you like about working at Metis?

The first thing I noticed when I came into the office was the warm and welcoming team and their willingness to offer help instantly when you asked for it. Also, social and fundraising activities during this period helped me to feel closer to the team.

What have you learned over the past few months?

I have learned to improve my management skills while working on various projects with different stakeholders during this period. Also, I am learning QGIS software and will start to practise it soon in a project where I am involved.

What do you like about working at Metis?

Since joining Metis, I have loved how involved I have been. Already I have been allowed to represent Metis at a Careers Fair and have been involved in the delivery of proposed designs and investigations for clients.

What have you learned over the past few months?

I have developed my communication skills in a matter of weeks and have insight into what a real-life engineering project involves, from proposals to completion and maintenance.

What do you like about working at Metis?

In my first few months at Metis, I have really enjoyed the diverse and inclusive nature of the team and everyone’s enthusiasm towards continuous learning.

What have you learned over the past few months?

Some of the key things I have learned over the last few months is how to take an all-encompassing approach to designing and managing subcontracts.

What do you like about working at Metis?

From the first contact with the team, I noticed how the people and the work environment made me feel welcome and integrated into the Metis team very quickly.

What have you learned over the past few months?

Metis is a company that values collaboration and cooperation. So, besides deepening my technical knowledge of the Water Engineering team, like GIS and hydraulic modelling, in every Metis meeting, I learn a little bit more about the projects developed by the other teams as well.

What do you like about working at Metis?

The first thing I spotted when I got to the office was a very young and dynamic environment. Everybody has been very welcoming, and I really enjoyed the multiple social events that have been organised during the past weeks.

It’s a great place to develop your professional and personal potential in a calm and comfortable space.

What have you learned over the past few months?

I’ve worked at Metis for roughly a month, yet I’ve improved my CAD knowledge, got started in complex programming and better understood QGIS software.

It’s great to put the knowledge gathered at university into practice, seeing all the technical and administrative processes behind every feature implemented.

What do you like about working at Metis?

I have enjoyed being involved in various projects and contributing something different across all of them.

What have you learned over the past few months?

Getting an understanding of all the different layers of local flood risk management has definitely been interesting.

What do you like about working at Metis?

The first few weeks at Metis have already given me a good insight into the industry. Metis has been very supportive, and I have enjoyed learning about the different opportunities and projects.

What have you learned over the past few months?

I have learned a lot about myself and being a Flood Risk Consultant. The industry is very collaborative, from smaller community groups and local councils to larger organisations such as the Environment Agency.

What do you like about working at Metis?

I’ve liked that everyone at Metis has been helpful, friendly, and welcoming, and there are also often opportunities to participate in social events outside of work hours. I’ve been able to apply my existing knowledge and skills whilst also gaining experience with new projects.

What have you learned over the past few weeks?

I’ve expanded my knowledge of flood risk management by updating local flood risk management strategies and contributing to ongoing flood alleviation schemes. I am looking forward to gaining new experience with flood risk investigations and planning applications soon.
